What is a Mudroom?

We have all heard of heated drying cupboards, cloak rooms, coat and hat stands, enclosed veranda’s or front doorsteps and messy entry floors covered in wet, dirty shoes and clothes but what is a MUDROOM?

I thought it was something only seen in countries overseas that have a lot of snow and wet weather. A separate room that you could come inside wet and muddy and take off dirty boots and wet clothes . Often housed kitty litter, food storage and positioned in an area not frequented by guests. But then….

I started to see mudrooms on Australian House plans especially Hamptons inspired homes and I thought WHAT! Why are people incorporating these rooms into our Aussie homes just to be trendy or different? Yet another US/UK trend we are copying? But STOP the bus!

I have been proven wrong. We may not be utilising a mudroom as our overseas counterparts are however. They can be found front and centre in our main entry, with the cabinetry designed cohesively with the rest of the home, for example; same shaker style door profiles as the kitchen, laundry and wet areas. We have decided school bags and discarded clothing and shoes now have a place. Our wet jackets aren’t hanging around on the backs of chairs or on a random coat rack. The OCD and organiser part of me is rejoicing, singing and dancing with glee! We now have a dedicated room for our clutter.

We are designing them within our laundries, lobby or entrance, side entrance or studies.

Since 2020 we have been utilising every space within our home so much more efficiently because we have all been home together so much more than before and need our own space.

1. Laundry mudrooms may incorporate a dog wash or dog bed, dog lead. Shelving for baskets, alcoves for bags, sporting equipment, umbrellas and shoes.

2. Entry Mudrooms may have hooks for coats, hats and bags, a seat to assist pulling on and off your water boots/gum boots, RM Williams or to buckle your shoes. Alcoves, shelves and cupboards. Designated baskets or shelf for each family member. Power points for charging phones and computers. If room allows perhaps additional items as listed in the laundry.

3. Side/back entrance opening into a hallway with a coat hook and a seat, maybe some baskets or a shelf. This has been our "norm" seen in many homes in Australia however now transformed to look like a purposeful place for items once placed in the kitchen or thrown haphazardly anywhere it lands. Beautifully appointed cabinetry planned as intently as we would a kitchen or pantry.

4. A wide hallway or room with outside access including all the usual mudroom features but throw a desk and a chair into the mix, BAM you now have a well organised multi-purpose space. Children can have access to the school bag and start their homework within the same area and/or Mum can have a place for home management (task boards, shopping lists, school correspondence and a central charging station for devices).

Whether your ideal Mudroom is a specific version or a combination of the above spaces it is still a Mudroom and I am a proud convert, I am on board and embracing this new room in our Australian homes and can see them becoming as popular as a nice spacious pantry.
